    eBay brakes...

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...EBWA%3AIT&rd=1

I spotted these Promax mech discs on eBay and they seemed like a good deal, they ended for $50 inc. levers, which would be a great deal if they are good. However, I cant find reviews or anything about them. There are some others on ebay and i mihgt snag one of they are nice. any input appreciated

What would you consider a good price range for avid mech brakes, is $130 for 160's front and rear a good deal? or for 7"s?

    thanks

Yes, $130 for a set of Avid's is a great deal.

Avids are so much better than those Promaxes and better than many hydraulic brakes. Save your cash and get the Avids.

I'd recommend staying away from these. They work well except for two things: they need disassembly and cleaning every 1000 km and they drag no matter what. Did I forget to say they weigh a ton?

Instead, get two front Shimano XT's at Pricepoint.com for $65 and two hydro lines at PerformanceBike.com for $5 and trade one of your front brakes to a rear one.

Actually, I think it was pirated from an EQ message board. She will not tell me for sure.

Oops, they were carrying them for several months and I got used to sending people there. I just checked now and these brakes are gone.

But, you can still get the Avids BBDB's for $70 there, or the same Shimano XT BR755 brakes from Performancebike.com at $120-20%=$96 using the discount code.

One final piece of advice. You have just been advised to tell between a good deal from the cheap sh!t. At Pricepoint, you will see very attractive deals on Promax disc brakes, mechs as well as hydros (sic!). At the price that low, you may want to give them a shot. Don't.

Pricepoint has lots of excellent deals and I am sure you will find other things to buy from them aside from these unfortunate brakes that drag, lose power, are a torture to tune up and keep the settings for no more that 6-8 rides.
