    discs with steel frames?

Anyone have good luck running disc on a flexy steel frame? I tried Hayes Mechs and they sang every pedal stroke...any ideas? I really would like discs...in fact I am building a set of disc wheels now and if worse comes to worst I WILL have the frame modified i.e a "prop rod" welded between the disc mount on the seat stay and the chain stay to stiffen the rear triangle just to run them. I think that stiffener is pretty common for disc-only lightweight steel frames. I would definitely have that added if you want the frame to last. My Steelman has one stock. It works great, though I weight 165 lbs with gear. YMMV

You should probably run 6" disc to minimize the effect of the flex, as I'm sure you've figured out.

A stiff wheel may help too. I mostly hear the singing sound during high-speed, brakeless cornering, not when hammering (sound is often coming from the front wheel, however.)

I have the same frame, under a different name, you are using.
Everything is just fine with discs and I weigh 228lb

Four pot XT 160mm rotor at rear
The disc mount is close enough to the drop out, resulting in little flex.
If the tube flex was a problem it would rear its ugly head with V brakes,
after all they put force more toward the middle of the tube.
I think a brace would be overkill, and quite ugly.
