    Disc brake squeal

I am new to disc brakes. Still learning. I ride up and down some very steep terrain and I have heard EVERY type of disc brake squealing from our prolonged steep decents.

I weigh 160 pounds. My ride has 160mm rotors front and rear.

I am assuming that the squeal is produced as they heat up. Mine do not squeal until I have been on them for a bit.

Would increasing rotor size eliminate the squeal?

Steep decents here on my local loop are 3 miles long.

Is 3 miles of consistant fairly hard braking just asking too much of disc brakes?

Is the squeal gonna happen in this situation no matter what???

I've not had that experience with my brakes (Elixir CR and BB7s) due to steepness or length. Maybe wet and cold or trail conditions can introduce some noise on occasion, but not as a normal course of use. I'd look more to quality of setup or contamination myself. Sometimes there are just harmonics of the various interfaces that make noise, too. Matter of eliminating possiblities rather than a general experience like you describe IMO.

More of a GROAN than a squeal

I meant to say that it's a loud groan I am hearing from mine and others on the steep long decents...

I had the same thing happen on a dry and warm day (80) with my Hayes Strokers. The descents werent 3 miles but I was on the brakes hard for 15-20 sec intervals over 1.5 to 2 miles. Noticed more from the front than rear but that could just be the acoustics...

My Juicy 7 used to give me a headache with squealing, I use the brake cleaner on the pad and rotors the problem went away. May be a good cleaning is needed on your system.
