Difference between DOT 5 and 5.1??

Avid recommend DOT 5.1 and I can get the DOT 5 at half the price in a car shop

DOT 5 is silicone based. DOT 5.1 is glycol based. DO NOT use DOT 5.

As the previous poster's have said, do not use DOT 5. It is a silicone based fluid that is not compatible with your brake system. My Elixers say DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 ONLY on the lever housings.

    Cheers, Brian

DOT 5 will eat your seals (because it's silicone based). Use DOT 5.1.

Yep, they already said it. The silicone based started with Harley Davidson I believe. They wanted something that lasts without attracting moisture and eating paintwork.

So DOT 5, silicone. DOT 5.1, the next generation of DOT 4. Stupid but that's the way it is.

dot 5.1 is a marketing name for a little bit (marginally) better dot 4 fluid.
