    Centerlock Lock Ring

6 month ago I got some new XTR rotors and they came with the centerlock lock ring that use the cassette tool to install.

Recently I got a new bike and it has Avid rotors on XT hubs, 160mm on rear and 180mm on the front. It has installed the larger diameter lock rings on both, i.e. the ones you use the Bottom Bracket tool to install. The funny thing is that these lock rings are marked for 15/20mm through axle only, but are fitted on 9mm QR hubs.

Apart from having a larger inner diameter to allow for the larger axle, what is the differenence between these type of lock rings. Can I just use the smaller diameter ones?, or indeed should I use them instead of the ones fitted?

It all depends on whether the part that the lockring threads into is different. The lockrings will generally stay with the hubs they came with, but you may find they are cross compatible.
