    Can you reuse compression fittings?

I've got a set of XT M775 brakes that needs lines shortened. Are the barbs easy to get out, or are the barbs and olives one-time use kinds of things?

    Thanks!

They are supposed to be replaced.

I am pretty sure the olive is not replaceable, as it is deformed once compressed. I dunno if you can manage to remove the barb with the olive stuck on it.

Cut the olive and slice out the barb. Barb should be re-usable if you can get it out.

Exactly, I have reused them several times. I cut the olive with a cut-off disc in a Dremel.

As others have posted, in a pinch you can reuse the barb. But IMO it is hardly worth the effort. Only reason to go there is if you are in a pinch and can't wait to order up or find the correct parts. I try to keep spares for my brakes just in case

That's easy to say if you can find the spare parts. I reuse the barbs and machine new olives.

Yep, sounds like I need to make a trip to the store, so I might as well get new barbs and olives. Thanks for the replies.

Both shimano and SRAM are good about using common olive and barb fitting across most of their product lines, so machining your own isn't likely to be necessary.
