    Brakes wont reset themselves

I have Avid Single Digit 5 rim brakes and after I apply my brakes the brake levers stay in and I have to use my hand to push the brakes back out. My from brakes also sway from left and right. How can I fix that?

It sounds to me like you are having some problems with your cables. How old are they? How have you stored the bike? When cables get dirt, grease, oil, water, and other things inside the housing, they get all gummed up and have a lot of friction. Assuming this is the problem, the solution is to get new cables and housing. If you have tools you can do it yourself but you may just want to take it to a shop.

Your brakes sway from the left to the right? It sounds like your wheel or wheels are out of true. When they spin, they are taking your brakes with them. Truing wheels is not for the faint of heart in general so that may be one for the shop as well.

No the brake isnt touching the rim when its moving it just sways on its own. And the cables are pretty old so maybe I'll replace them and see what happens.

Don't forget to clean out the noodle as well. That can be a huge source of drag.

Are the return springs working right?

Also, do the arms move freely on their pivots?

I've seen broken return springs a few times so that's also a possibility.
