Brake Line Compatibility
I have some Hayes hydraulic line that I bought to use on the HFX series. But I need to replace some line on my Shimano XTs (BLM-775).
Will the Hayes line work for the Shimano brakes?
Thanks for any help.
Hayes use DOT 4 fluid and Shimano brakes use mineral oil, so that would be the start of the incompatibility, and then hose ID and OD are not likely to match. You really need the Shimano SM-BH59 hose for the M775 brakes.
Not a chance, they are not compatible...

Hydraulic hoses are pretty much universal. Just make sure they are for high pressure applications, that the ID and OD match that of the original (even slightly out of spec will work because of the nature of compression joints). DOT fluid or mineral oil can be used since the interior surface is not affected by it (it's not a rubber seal).
Myself, I've used 5mm Hope hoses in combination with a wide variety of brake brandnames with great success. Of course, I've also used other branded hoses in mix 'n' match setups.
Shimano will tell that the hoses are not compatible.
They will tell you that no other mineral oil is compatible with their own proprietary mineral oil.
They will also tell you not to disassemble their HT2 BB, "because it's not serviceable"...
OK the verdict is in: Using mineral oil in a Hayes brake line for use with a Shimano BLM-775 brake worked without issue. In fact, the brake works very well.
Thanks to all who replied. I really appreciate it . . . and good call Standard.
