    Brake Fluid Damage

I'm upgrading to disc brakes and am considering buying a used set of Hayes HFX Mags. They've had minimal use and seem to be in good condition except for some paint damage on one lever from brake fluid. Is it normal for brake fluid to leak and cause this type of damage on hydros? Does this indicate some sort of problem with the brakes? Thanks.

    Is it normal? Well, no.

Is it common when people bleed their brakes? Yes.

Ask the seller what the deal is. Ask for a further discount because of the damage and risk you're taking. Hayes' are easy to rebuild... worse case.

    Yes, all too common

Hayes brake levers have some seriously bad paint on the levers. It flaked off on mine just from tightening down the lever on the handlebar. Don't fret over a little missing paint. Hayes commonly have that problem. -t
