Bleeding Hayes Nine 9 top-down by removing reservoir cap.

A buddy just got a consignment bike with Hayes Nines brakes. They need to be bled because the lever is going down to the bar. Hopefully all they need is the bleed. Since DOT fluid and hose can be had for less than the shipping cost for "hayes bleed kit" we're gonna try to bleed 'em.

The brakes I've bled before were Shimano Deores. They're really easy to do top-down style. Has anyone bled Hayes Nines by removing the reservoir cap and bladder seal (see pic) and pumping fluid out the bottom bleed nipple (like the Deores)? It really shortens the list of stuff you need to just a squirt bottle to keep the reservoir filled and a little bit of hose to attach to the caliper bleed nipple.

Good idea? Bad idea? Anyone tried this before??
