I think I know where you're coming from here. The other day I saw a set of Juicy Ultimates or similar designation that definitely had the same apparent calipers as my Elixirs and definitely used the same top loading pads as mine. It had Juicy master cylinders. I think it was on an '09 top-of-the-line Specialized carbon Epic. Now, I know that all Ultimates definitely don't use Elixir calipers, but there's some kind of mix/match deal going on out there, and it may just be in some OEM setups. What I saw was definitely a factory setup and not done by the bike owner.

thanks tnc. yeah this is also on a specialized. it uses the top loading pads like you said. is there another type of pad out there that i don't know about for what they are calling the "ultimate sl." i just ordered elixir pads so we will see. sure looks like the right one.

I'll bet you have what I saw, and I'll bet the Elixir pads will fit. None of the more common Ulitmate calipers have top loading pads, do they? I'm asking, not claiming to know absolutely. Can you post a pic?
