Bonking ... not feelin' well avid mech rattle

I have the first generation avid mechanicals and my outer pads rattle around annoying the hell outa me. I've cleaned the magnets but the pistons just seem loose and rattle and vibrate right up the fork. Any ideas to fix? Does the new style work better?

    Here's the cure..

I love my generation 1 Avids, but put up with the constant jingling/rattling for a year before I did this. The noise is annoying, but don't buy new brakes; the V1's are easily silenced!

The new generation Avid CPS calipers use an 'H-spring' instead of magnets to hold the pads still, and these springs can be used in the older calipers, too. The older pads may need to be slightly re-shaped* with a file, but newer Avid pads are made to work with the springs.

I bought a bag of 10 springs from AEBike: http://aebike.com/site/page.cfm?PageID=30&SKU=BR6948

They are cheap and reusable, so you'll have a few spares.

I'm sure this will eliminate the rattle, and you'll be able to enjoy the sound of the trail again!

*If you are keeping your existing pads just remove about 2mm of the pad's compound on the three sides to make room for the spring. The compound is soft, so a few strokes of a file will do. It'll take only a minute, and be sure to do your spare pair of pads to match for when that time comes. Newer Avid specific pads would save you this modifying, though.
