Avid Jucy Ultimate, good or bad?
Was looking at picking up a new rear brake, and this Avid Ultimate is available brand new from a guy online so I wont be paying retail, but I couldnt find a mtbr review. Thats pretty much what I go by when trying to find which products are worth it or not.
Its replacing my stock Elixer 7 SL, just not a big fan of the feel or power it gives me, and the one review I found for the Ultimate says it was designed for race XC, so I assume a higher end XC, meaning good stopping power. Pretty pimp looking as well hahaha
Anyone run this brake? opinions?
I think the Juicy's are older than the Elixir's youve got. What's your budget? I think you'll find that many people (myself included) find Avid brakes to be very sub-par.
Alcohol may lead nowhere, but it sure is the scenic route!
Re: Avid Jucy Ultimate, good or bad?
I had the Juicy Ultimate front and rear on a bike I built up in '07. I don't know if there is/was a newer version of the brake since then. It was "good," but the bike I got to replace that one had the new XT brakes which I found to be worlds better. Better modulation, quiet, no fade on descents, and no change of the brake lever contact point with long descents. All those things were worse with the Juicy Ultimates.
Depending on the price, look at the new XT's with ice-tech rotors instead.

You would be going backwards buying he Juicy Ultimates. They were the best of the Juicy line, but all of the Juicy's were junk.
Get a set of XT's and feel the power!
Yep - keep the Elixirs. Elixir replaced the entire Juicy line, in 2008. Going from an Elixir 7SL to a Juicy Ultimate is not even considered a lateral move....it's going backwards. Sorry, but the Shimano XT is well worth it!
