    aluminum oxide sandpaper?

A couple months ago I put on new pads as I would normally, sanded the rotors a little to rough them up, wipe down with rubbing alcohol, and went to bed them in. Really poor performance and howled like crazy. Really bad glazing on pads. Took everything apart, cleaned everything up as normal being super careful about contamination, same result. Figured maybe a bad couple sets so new pads. New pads, same result.
The only new thing was some black sandpaper i had around I'd never used before. So another set of pads and using some known garnet based paper I'd used before. Much better but still not quite normal. No howling or bad glazing but still weak performance. Buy new rotors, new pads, garnet paper...and all is good again. Same brand rotor and pads.

The sandpaper doesn't say what its made of but on my automobiles I've seen a warning about using aluminum oxide sandpaper on rotors. Apparently the aluminum oxide beds itself into the cast iron and stops the brakes from bedding normally. I would guess the same applies to bike rotors. Thats the only thing I can think of.

Anyway, has anyone ever experienced anything like this?

Bike rotors aren't cast iron, embedded aluminum oxide isn't a real concern in steel. Aluminum oxide is a poor choice for sanding steel though, doesn't perfom well on harder materials. Silicon carbide would be my choice for sanding rotors.

If sandpaper was black, it was likely silicon carbide
