New question here. 6" or 7" Avid Mechs for the front?

I'm transitioning over from V's to disc and I'm starting with just the front. I'm trying to decide between the 6" or 7" Avid mechanical. Is the 7" worth the extra weigth/expense?

I'm 180is and ride cross country in Colorado and Utah.

...from the greater heat shedding ability of the larger rotor. It's got not only the increased brake track area, but twice the number of rotor "spokes" to channel heat away towards the hub. If you're riding lots of vertical, you'll appreciate the quieter operation that results from the cooler-running rotor.

At 235lbs, I rode the 165mm rotor for about a year. Never felt it lacked power, and I definitely appreciated the great low-speed modulation, but I heated that piece-o-metal up so hot on a regular basis that it's got permanent rainbow discoloration (kinda cool). When I switched to a front 185, the heat issue went away. Now that I'm a bit lighter, I do miss the modulation of the smaller rotor in certain low speed technical situations, but it's a minor trade-off I can live with.

one other issue to concider - specialized just recalled some enduros with the bigger rotors becasue of issues with the fork not being able to take the added stress (enduro's with fox forks, not manitous). so... you might want to check with your fork manufacturer's specs first. hope that helps also!
Take the long cut, we'll get there eventually.

I use 185 mm rotors. Like them much better than 160s. Avids do not use 6" or 7" rotors.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common
