2 Friends ( Nat Samson and Jeff Dean) of mine will be in Cambodia in January and February 2010 with water filter to provide good drinkable water to villages between Siem Reap(Phnom Penh) and Preah Viheard.

At my end I will try to do my best to help them by raising money in order to buy permanent water filter capable to filter enough volume of water for an entire village rather than a few hourse along the way.

Consequently I will turn the winter challenge as a fund raiser for a water cause.
The plan is to do a 100 miler in 2 days the weekend of January 23/24. Yes all on snowmobile trails. The location TBA in December sometimes.

Their is no web site. For the only interested I can be reached at rd@ultimatexc.com

Each racers/particpant interested to do this Crazy Frenchy adventure; will have to pay 150.00 dollars that will go towards buying a filtration system that will be shipped in Cambodia. That simple

So far I am alone doing it. Who is in ?

Rock and Roll time. The ultimate Xc MTB winter race

Friday night Criterium will take place on lake Memphremagog in Newport Vermont. Using Map quest, type in East Side Restaurant & Pub in Newport Vt You can either get a map or the driving direction on mapquest.com.

We want you there for the latest at 6.00 PM, that we can have enough time to give you your race packet and a few practice loop around the oval before the actual start at 7.00 PM

You will need studs for this stage of the race. If we have a bumpy and crappy ice you might be able to do it wihtout studs. In the last 2 weeks the ice has been different everyday. It is very difficult to predict what it will be like on race night

The Oval is at the end of the road and you will see a bunch of cars parked on the left hand side of the street leading to the lake. THIS IS IT.

The weather has been pretty mild here but the temperature will plunge on ThurSday night and the lake as well as the snowmobile trail should be nice hard pack. Depending on how fast the cold snap will hit us, I am planning on flooding the Oval to get a mirror like Ice. I might not succeed but plan to bring your Stud, after all it is suppose to be an Ice Criterium and I am going to make every effort to deliver a surface as slippery as possible.

The oval will be equiped with lighting howeverit is a good idea to either bring a light system if you have one or a head lamp in case we end up having black spot on the course.

If you are not going to make it for Friday night you need to be at the American Legion ( Newport Post) on Saturday Morning by 7.00 am to pick up for bike plate etc.. Again use mapquest.com and type in North Country Union High School .The American Legion is right beside it and you will see our sign.

The 10 miler rider are also required to be at the American Legion for 7.00 am since we cannot be at two places at the same time. As we are giving the start at 8.00 am for the 30 miler we have to shuttle to the start of the 10 miler. If you are not here when we leave you will not be ale to to do the race.

We will have a few emergency package extra if you forgot yours or could not find a few of the mandatory items such as the fire starter. We have plenty we can provide you with.

You will not be allowed to start without a blinking light in front and one in the back.

If it’s your first year and you are not sure about a zillion details, don’t hesitate to use the FORUM to ask questions. Show up early it is amazing how experience racers will be able to help you out.

2 Pugsley will be available for tryout and for rent if you wish to do so. One is with a ski in front and the other is with a wheel

Each Aid Station this year will be a mandatory stop . You are responsible to report. Failure to do so, could disqualify you.

I have eliminated Aid station 1 right after the lake crossing. 2 Aid station will be local stores. 2 Aid station will be private home and one will be a local mecanic that likes to drink Bud. Be ready for a stop and say hello and don’t be surprise if he offer you a beer.

I have eliminated the 2 road section therefore expect the course to be a bit slower( time wise) than last year)

The aid stations are all well stocked with hot and cold liquid, plenty of food. You will find Hot chilli as well as Banana’s Chocolate Fondue along the course. Make sure to eat a lot since the 30 miler will take you the same amount of energy than a 60 miler in the summer time.

If you are riding a SS, a 2:1 ratio would be a mistake.
If you are riding a pugs don’t be surprise to drop the pressure as low as 5 pounds if the ground get soft.
Try to get your tire as wide and knobby as possible
Carry your camel back inside your coat or jacket. I don’t care how insulated your tube is… It will freeze and you will end up dehydrated. Cramping in the winter in the middle of nowhere is not a pleasant feeling

This year we will require that you wear a race Bib # on your jacket as well as a Bike plate.
hand warmer and fire starter will be availabe for 2.00 dollars each if you happen to need some.

See You Friday Night
