How to Defy Age and Overcome your Fears.
Does this picture fit you?
Scenario:
You start getting some chest pain on long uphill walks. Shortness of breath and panting trying to keep up with your kids. So you go to the doctors and have a check up.
A week later, your doctor rings you at work. He tells you that your arteries are badly blocked, your blood pressure is sky-high, your cholesterol count is over the top, and you could have a fatal stroke at any time...and you are only 45 years old!
This shakes you up quite a bit. You ask him for his recommendations. He tells you that you have to lose weight, get fit, stop eating crappy fatty junk foods, and schedules you for a heart operation in a couple of weeks. He wants to insert several stents and maybe do a bypass.
If you are lucky, you might live to see your kids grow up...
You survive the operation, and come out of the hospital much poorer money-wise, but with a much healthier heart.
Now you have to make a decision. One which can save your life if you get it correct.
You go to your local bike shop and after talking to the guys there, you purchase a new mountain bike.
The first couple of weeks are hell! Everything hurts. You find muscle groups you never knew your body had, cause they hurt like crazy.. Your bum is so sore you can hardly walk. You are covered in wounds and have yards of skin missing from every part of your sore body from crashing. Your kids think it's funny and your wife thinks you are stark raving mad.
You persevere even though you hurt. You want to give up, but you know that riding on the dirt is gonna keep you OUT of it...
The weeks pass. You improve. Your fitness rises as you ride more. The parts of the trails that seemed impossible before are much easier now. You have lost weight, and you are feeling better every day. You have your first "Zen-like" experience of riding "in the Zone" that makes you want to do it again and again.
Your wife begins to look at your slimmer fitter body with "that look" in her eyes. Sex is better than ever. Your 'thin' clothes start to fit you again. You are eating the correct food and riding a lot.
You go back to your doc for a six month check-up. He nods and smiles when he reads your blood pressure. Everything is going well.
Then it happens. You walk past the local bike shop and see "IT".
OMG! it's like sex on a stick. You have to have it. You go into the shop and start fondling it. It's smooth curves are erotic and it looks like it has your name printed all over it.
You rush home and clean your el-cheapo mountain bike and race back to the shop to make a trade. The guy gives you a price on your old clunker and even though it's only a tenth of what you paid for it a few months ago, you say ok.
Your journey to the dark side has begun..
When you get her home, you sneak her into the garage/workshop where you just sit and stare at her shining under the lights. You spend several hours polishing almost invisible specks of dust off her gleaming body.
All you can think about is how you are going to ride her tomorrow.
Your fears of dying young have vanished. You feel fit and alive. All your friends notice how well you are looking, even some of the sweet office chicks are starting to look at you with new interest.
Every afternoon, you ride. Sometimes alone, sometimes with your kids. They dare you to try new things, jumps and stunts. You try, because you want to improve. Sometimes you crash, but everyone has a good laugh...including you.
Life is good and you are feeling great. The humble bicycle is changing your life.....
Ride......... Ride every chance you get. Never stop riding. Riding saves your life, it keeps you fit, and teaches you to overcome your fears.
It keeps you ON the dirt, not UNDER it.

History:
On one of the outer arms of a spiral galaxy spinning through the endless reaches of space, there was a small blue planet. It spins around a G type sun, the third outwards from the star in a group of nine.
This once lovely blue planet, known as "Earth" a rather plain name for such a nice world, was the home to a race of bipeds known as "humans".
The majority of these humans seemed to be intent on destroying the planet and everything on it.
They finally succeeded.
Methods:
The main weapon used to destroy the planet was "Pollution". Pollution of all different types, but all contributing to the eventual destruction of the world.
Global Warming:
This caused the extensive icecaps on the top and bottom of the planet to melt, thereby raising the deep oceans to new levels, and allowing a much greater change in the atmosphere which eventually killed every living thing on the surface of the world.
Synopsis:
It is rumoured that a few human beings still live on "Earth" but only deep underground. The surface of the planet is seared by the star around which the planet revolves ... The whole world surface is now a desert, dry and hot, devoid of life and water.
Requiescat In Pace.

Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam
Edward FitzGerald's Translation.
1
Awake! for Morning in the Bowl of Night
Has flung the Stone that puts the Stars to Flight:
And Lo! the Hunter of the East has caught
The Sultan's Turret in a Noose of Light.
2
Dreaming when Dawn's Left Hand was in the Sky
I heard a Voice within the Tavern cry,
"Awake, my Little ones, and fill the Cup
"Before Life's Liquor in its Cup be dry."
3
And, as the Cock crew, those who stood before
The Tavern shouted--"Open then the Door!
"You know how little while we have to stay,
"And, once departed, may return no more."
4
Now the New Year reviving old Desires,
The thoughtful Soul to Solitude retires,
Where the WHITE HAND OF MOSES on the Bough
Puts out, and Jesus from the Ground suspires.
*****
5
Iram indeed is gone with all its Rose,
And Jamshyd's Sev'n-ring'd Cup where no one knows;
But still the Vine her ancient Ruby yields,
And still a Garden by the Water blows.
6
And David's Lips are lock't; but in divine
High piping Pehlevi, with "Wine! Wine! Wine!
"Red Wine!"---the Nightingale cries to the Rose
That yellow Cheek of hers to incarnadine.
7
Come, fill the Cup, and in the Fire of Spring
The Winter Garment of Repentance fling:
The Bird of Time has but a little way
To fly---and Lo! the Bird is on the Wing.
8
And look---a thousand Blossoms with the Day
Woke---and a thousand scatter'd into Clay:
And this first Summer Month that brings the Rose
Shall take Jamshyd and Kaikobad away.
*****
9
But come with old Khayyam, and leave the Lot
Of Kaikobad and Kaikhosru forgot!
Let Rustum lay about him as he will,
Or Hatim Tai cry Supper---heed them not.
10
With me along some Strip of Herbage strown
That just divides the desert from the sown,
Where name of Slave and Sultan scarce is known,
And pity Sultan Mahmud on his Throne.
11
Here with a Loaf of Bread beneath the Bough,
A Flask of Wine, a Book of Verse---and Thou
Beside me singing in the Wilderness---
And Wilderness is Paradise enow.
12
"How sweet is mortal Sovranty!"---think some:
Others---"How blest the Paradise to come!"
Ah, take the Cash in hand and waive the Rest;
Oh, the brave Music of a distant Drum!
*****
13
Look to the Rose that blows about us---"Lo,
"Laughing," she says, "into the World I blow:
"At once the silken Tassel of my Purse
"Tear, and its Treasure on the Garden throw."
14
The Worldly Hope men set their Hearts upon
Turns Ashes---or it prospers; and anon,
Like Snow upon the Desert's dusty Face
Lighting a little Hour or two---is gone.
15
And those who husbanded the Golden Grain,
And those who flung it to the Winds like Rain,
Alike to no such aureate Earth are turn'd
As, buried once, Men want dug up again.
16
Think, in this batter'd Caravanserai
Whose Doorways are alternate Night and Day,
How Sultan after Sultan with his Pomp
Abode his Hour or two, and went his way.
*****
17
They say the Lion and the Lizard keep
The Courts where Jamshyd gloried and drank deep;
And Bahram, that great Hunter---the Wild Ass
Stamps o'er his Head, and he lies fast asleep.
18
I sometimes think that never so red
The Rose as where some buried Caesar bled;
That every Hyacinth the Garden wears
Dropt in its Lap from some once lovely Head.
19
And this delightful Herb whose tender Green
Fledges the River's Lip on which we lean---
Ah, lean upon it lightly! for who knows
From what once lovely Lip it springs unseen!
20
Ah, my Beloved, fill the Cup that clears
TO-DAY of past Regrets and future Fears---
To-morrow?---Why, To-morrow I may be
Myself with Yesterday's Sev'n Thousand Years.
*****
21
Lo! some we loved, the loveliest and best
That Time and Fate of all their Vintage prest,
Have drunk their Cup a Round or two before,
And one by one crept silently to Rest.
22
And we, that now make merry in the Room
They left, and Summer dresses in new Bloom,
Ourselves must we beneath the Couch of Earth
Descend, ourselves to make a Couch---for whom?
23
Ah, make the most of what we yet may spend,
Before we too into the Dust descend;
Dust into Dust, and under Dust, to lie,
Sans Wine, sans Song, sans Singer, and---sans End!
24
Alike for those who for TO-DAY prepare,
And those that after a TO-MORROW stare,
A Muezzin from the Tower of Darkness cries
"Fools! your Reward is neither Here nor There!"
*****
25
Why, all the Saints and Sages who discuss'd
Of the Two Worlds so learnedly, are thrust
Like foolish Prophets forth; their Words to Scorn
Are scatter'd, and their Mouths are stopt with Dust.
26
Oh, come with old Khayyam, and leave the Wise
To talk; one thing is certain, that Life flies;
One thing is certain, and the Rest is Lies;
The Flower that once has blown for ever dies.
27
Myself when young did eagerly frequent
Doctor and Saint, and heard great Argument
About it and about: but evermore
Came out by the same Door as in I went.
28
With them the Seed of Wisdom did I sow,
And with my own hand labour'd it to grow:
And this was all the Harvest that I reap'd---
"I came like Water, and like Wind I go."
*****
29
Into this Universe, and why not knowing,
Nor whence, like Water willy-nilly flowing:
And out of it, as Wind along the Waste,
I know not whither, willy-nilly blowing.
30
What, without asking, hither hurried whence?
And, without asking, whither hurried hence!
Another and another Cup to drown
The Memory of this Impertinence!
31
Up from Earth's Centre through the Seventh Gate
I rose, and on the Throne of Saturn sate,
And many Knots unravel'd by the Road;
But not the Knot of Human Death and Fate.
32
There was a Door to which I found no Key:
There was a Veil past which I could not see:
Some little Talk awhile of ME and THEE
There seemed---and then no more of THEE and ME.
*****
33
Then to the rolling Heav'n itself I cried,
Asking, "What Lamp had Destiny to guide
"Her little Children stumbling in the Dark?"
And---"A blind Understanding!" Heav'n replied.
34
Then to this earthen Bowl did I adjourn
My Lip the secret Well of Life to learn:
And Lip to Lip it murmur'd---"While you live
"Drink!---for once dead you never shall return."
35
I think the Vessel, that with fugitive
Articulation answer'd, once did live,
And merry-make; and the cold Lip I kiss'd
How many Kisses might it take---and give!
36
For in the Market-place, one Dusk of Day,
I watch'd the Potter thumping his wet Clay:
And with its all obliterated Tongue
It murmur'd---"Gently, Brother, gently, pray!"
*****
37
Ah, fill the Cup:---what boots it to repeat
How Time is slipping underneath our Feet:
Unborn TO-MORROW, and dead YESTERDAY,
Why fret about them if TO-DAY be sweet!
38
One Moment in Annihilation's Waste,
One Moment, of the Well of Life to taste---
The Stars are setting and the Caravan
Starts for the Dawn of Nothing---Oh, make haste!
39
How long, how long, in infinite Pursuit
Of This and That endeavour and dispute?
Better be merry with the fruitful Grape
Than sadden after none, or bitter, Fruit.
40
You know, my Friends, how long since in my House
For a new Marriage I did make Carouse:
Divorced old barren Reason from my Bed,
And took the Daughter of the Vine to Spouse.
*****
41
For "IS" and "IS-NOT" though with Rule and Line,
And "UP-AND-DOWN" without, I could define,
I yet in all I only cared to know,
Was never deep in anything but---Wine.
42
And lately, by the Tavern Door agape,
Came stealing through the Dusk an Angel Shape
Bearing a Vessel on his Shoulder; and
He bid me taste of it; and 'twas---the Grape!
43
The Grape that can with Logic absolute
The Two-and-Seventy jarring Sects confute:
The subtle Alchemist that in a Trice
Life's leaden Metal into Gold transmute.
44
The mighty Mahmud, the victorious Lord,
That all the misbelieving and black Horde
Of Fears and Sorrows that infest the Soul
Scatters and slays with his enchanted Sword.
*****
45
But leave the Wise to wrangle, and with me
The Quarrel of the Universe let be:
And, in some corner of the Hubbub coucht,
Make Game of that which makes as much of Thee.
46
For in and out, above, about, below,
'Tis nothing but a Magic Shadow-show,
Play'd in a Box whose Candle is the Sun,
Round which we Phantom Figures come and go.
47
And if the Wine you drink, the Lip you press,
End in the Nothing all Things end in ---Yes---
Then fancy while Thou art, Thou art but what
Thou shalt be---Nothing---Thou shalt not be less.
48
While the Rose blows along the River Brink,
With old Khayyam the Ruby Vintage drink:
And when the Angel with his darker Draught
Draws up to Thee---take that, and do not shrink.
*****
49
'Tis all a Chequer-board of Nights and Days
Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays:
Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays,
And one by one back in the Closet lays.
50
The Ball no Question makes of Ayes and Noes,
But Right or Left, as strikes the Player goes;
And He that toss'd Thee down into the Field,
*He* knows about it all---He knows---HE knows!
51
The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ,
Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
52
And that inverted Bowl we call The Sky,
Whereunder crawling coop't we live and die,
Lift not thy hands to *It* for help---for It
Rolls impotently on as Thou or I.
*****
53
With Earth's first Clay They did the Last Man's knead,
And then of the Last Harvest sow'd the Seed:
Yea, the first Morning of Creation wrote
What the Last Dawn of Reckoning shall read.
54
I tell Thee this---When, starting from the Goal,
Over the shoulders of the flaming Foal
Of Heav'n Parvin and Mushtara they flung,
In my predestin'd Plot of Dust and Soul
55
The Vine had struck a Fibre; which about
If clings my Being---let the Sufi flout;
Of my Base Metal may be filed a Key,
That shall unlock the Door he howls without
56
And this I know: whether the one True Light,
Kindle to Love, or Wrathconsume me quite,
One Glimpse of It within the Tavern caught
Better than in the Temple lost outright.
*****
57
Oh, Thou, who didst with Pitfall and with Gin
Beset the Road I was to wander in,
Thou wilt not with Predestination round
Enmesh me, and impute my Fall to Sin?
58
Oh, Thou, who Man of baser Earth didst make,
And who with Eden didst devise the Snake;
For all the Sin wherewith the Face of Man
Is blacken'd, Man's Forgiveness give---and take!
KUZA-NAMA ("Book of Pots.")
59
Listen again. One Evening at the Close
Of Ramazan, ere the better Moon arose,
In that old Potter's Shop I stood alone
With the clay Population round in Rows.
60
And, strange to tell, among that Earthen Lot
Some could articulate, while others not:
And suddenly one more impatient cried---
"Who *is* the Potter, pray, and who the Pot?"
*****
61
Then said another---"Surely not in vain
"My Substance from the common Earth was ta'en,
"That He who subtly wrought me into Shape
"Should stamp me back to common Earth again."
62
Another said---"Why, ne'er a peevish Boy,
"Would break the Bowl from which he drank in Joy;
"Shall He that *made* the Vessel in pure Love
"And Fancy, in an after Rage destroy!"
63
None answer'd this; but after Silence spake
A Vessel of a more ungainly Make:
"They sneer at me for learning all awry;
"What! did the Hand then of the Potter shake?"
64
Said one---"Folk of a surly Tapster tell
"And daub his Visage with the Smoke of Hell;
"They talk of some strict Testing of us---Pish!
"He's a Good Fellow, and 't will all be well."
*****
65
Then said another with a long-drawn Sigh,
"My Clay with long oblivion is gone dry:
"But, fill me with the old familiar Juice,
"Methinks I might recover by-and-bye!"
66
So while the Vessels one by one were speaking,
One spied the little Crescent all were seeking:
And then they jogg'd each other, "Brother! Brother!
"Hark to the Porter's Shoulder-knot a-creaking!"
67
Ah, with the Grape my fading Life provide,
And wash my Body whence the Life has died,
And in the Windingsheet of Vine-leaf wrapt,
So bury me by some sweet Garden-side.
68
That ev'n my buried Ashes such a Snare
Of Perfume shall fling up into the Air,
As not a True Believer passing by
But shall be overtaken unaware.
*****
69
Indeed the Idols I have loved so long
Have done my Credit in Men's Eye much wrong:
Have drown'd my Honour in a shallow Cup,
And sold my Reputation for a Song.
70
Indeed, indeed, Repentance oft before
I swore---but was I sober when I swore?
And then and then came Spring, and Rose-in-hand
My thread-bare Penitence apieces tore.
71
And much as Wine has play'd the Infidel
And robb'd me of my Robe of Honour---well,
I often wonder what the Vintners buy
One half so precious as the Goods they sell.
72
Alas, that Spring should vanish with the Rose!
That Youth's sweet-scented Manuscript should close!
The Nightingale that in the Branches sang,
Ah, whence, and whither flown again, who knows!
*****
73
Ah Love! could thou and I with Fate conspire
To grasp this sorry Scheme of Things entire,
Would not we shatter it to bits---and then
Re-mould it nearer to the Heart's Desire!
74
Ah, Moon of my Delight who Know'st no wane
The Moon of Heav'n is rising once again:
How oft hereafter rising shall she look
Through this same Garden after me---in vain!
75
And when Thyself with shining Foot shall pass
Among the Guests Star-scatter'd on the Grass,
And in thy joyous Errand reach the Spot
Where I made one---turn down an empty Glass!
Tamam Shud.

2007 has been a great year for bicycling, and we have seen some good new products hit the shops as well as some good old ones still going strong.
These are my "Best of the 2007 Year" bikes and components.
* 29" Bike : Niner Bikes RIP 9.
Excellent handling, confidence-inspiring mid travel AM bike that loves going fast down hills. Well made, great geometry, it does everything well. Atomic Blue frame glows in the dark. [This frame was voted best by MTBR.]
* 26" Bike : Ibis Mojo Carbon.
Beautifully made and constructed Carbon frame that is light for a full suspension long travel AM bike. A really great looking frame in naked carbon. Getting rave reviews from all owners. Designed by a very talented woman. [This frame was voted best by MTBR.]
* Components : Stans Flow / Arch Rims.
The Flow and it's smaller sibling, the Arch, has placed easy efficient and safe tubeless tire setups within the reach of every rider. The rims are light and strong. This is my outright "Best of the Best" choice for 2007, and the outright winner for this year. These two rims have made it so easy to go tubeless, safely.
Those are my top choices for this year.
** Overall Winner**
Stans Flow and Arch Rims.
Congratulations, well done..
Rainman.

Some background ....
I first started bicycling when I was five years old. I've been bicycling off and on, ever since.
Over those years, you get to see a lot of fads and trends come and go.
I've seen plenty.
You also get to find out what is good and what isn't so good. Hindsight is 100% accurate..
There are a lot of products on the market for bicycles, and new ones emerge every year. Mostly though, the latest products are either re-hashed components that have been around for years, or some new wild ideas that never lasts too long under actual testing.
However, there are those products that have proven themselves not only reliable, but durable and very good for today's cyclist.
Here is a list of products and components which I have found to be well above average in reliability and durability.
* Rohloff Speedhub. Incredibly good low maintenance German transmission / gear system that just keeps on going. Top class engineering. 100% reliable in any condition that would make a derailleur system scream, lift up it's skirt and run away...
* Brooks leather saddles. Hand made high quality leather saddles from craftsmen in England that all other saddles are judged by. Comfortable and permanently conforms to the shape of your body over time.
* Jeff Jones Titanium H Bars. Fantastic handlebars hand made by the Master frame builder, Jeff Jones. A work of art. Vibration absorbing with just the right amount of sweep and flex.
* Thomson seat posts and stems. For alloy lovers, it doesn't get much better than the Thomson products. Very strong and reliable.
* Moots Titanium seat post. Wonderful welding, great Ti flex, ultra reliable. A little hard to change saddles until you get the "method". Soaks up small bumps well.
* ESI Silicone grips. These things are light, soft, comfortable, don't slip, absorb vibes, don't make your hands hot or sweaty, and last a long time. Cheap, too. Excellent handlebar grips.
* Azonic A-Frame platform pedals. They can take a bashing, are strong and tough. Big traction pins grip your shoes very well, but will extract blood if you are not careful. Great platform pedals.
* Five-Ten Impact Shoes. These are THE shoes for platform pedal riders. They are the stickiest soled shoes ever made. They NEVER let your foot slip off the pedal. If you are using platforms, these are your shoes.
* Chris King Headsets and Hubs. They cost a LOT, but in the end, are worth it. Great engineering, fast engagement, reliable, and they come in colours to suit your bike. Great warranty, too.
* DT Swiss spokes. The industry leader in spokes. Reliable swiss made spokes for your wheels.
* Camelback Hydration Systems. Excellent and reliable way to carry your water and some tools / spares on your back. I have had the same old Camelback pack for years, it just keeps on hanging in there.
* 'Polaroid' sunglasses. I've tried a lot of different types of riding glasses but always come back to Polaroids. The best glare-cutter for daytime riding.
* Zerie USA cycling clothing. Their shorts are very good, well made, comfortable, and last a long time. Pretty cheap, too.
* Cane Creek Thudbuster seat post. This is THE post to use if you want a softer ride on your hardtail bike. Comes with different grades of elastomers to tune the post to your weight. Reliable, well made and re-buildable. Excellent product.
* Hope QR skewers. These skewers have no plastic bits. They are well made and reliable, come in different colours, and you can tighten them down hard. The fulcrum / pivot is brass so there is no wimpy plastic to stretch or warp under load. Excellent QR's.
* Pro Link Pro Gold Chain Lube. A thin oil that penetrates right inside the links of your chain and makes everything run smoothly and quietly. Just apply directly to the chain, wipe off the excess, and go ride. Very good chain lube.
* Enduro Fork seals and bearings. The Rolls Royce of seals and bearings for your bike.. Highly recommended for your next hub, BB or fork re-build.
* Halo headbands. Fantastic idea, works great, keeps the sweat out of your eyes, cheap, last a long time.

If you ever manage to find "The One", that perfect saddle for you, after having sat on it for a few months during long rides to make sure that it is still comfy and doesn't hurt, feels great and doesn't make you sore .... my advice is to go out and buy two more of them.
THE most IMPORTANT part of any bike is this one piece of equipment!
Nothing ...... nothing can kill a good ride and a good bike faster than an uncomfortable saddle. It is, without a doubt, THE most important part of a bike for you simply because it's where you sit.
The human body is most comfortable sitting on a fairly flat surface, that's what bottoms are for, and we all have one..
However, bicycle saddles aren't ... flat ... not like a chair or a lounge. This is the reason why we must spend a LOT of time and patience finding just the right saddle that fits our body perfectly.
There are hundreds of different shapes and sizes of saddles out there, just like there are a lot of different bodies that ride them.
We need to go on a search to find just the right one that doesn't 'kill' us when we ride the bike, one that doesn't make you wish you were somewhere else instead of sitting on a torture device...
Sometimes it can take a long time to find the perfect saddle, but once you find it ...... go buy two more after you are absolutely sure that you have found "The One".
Most saddle manufacturers change saddle styles and models every year or so. Quite often, they also change the shape and the padding too. This is the main reason why you should hoard up a few saddles if you find the perfect one for your body, simply because you may not be able to get that same saddle again in a year or two. It will be out of production.
There are some very notable exceptions to this rule.
Manufacturers like the English firm Brooks have been making hand-made leather saddles the same way for over a hundred years. The saddles have changed very little from year to year, so it is entirely possible to still buy a 5 year old Brooks B17 that is exactly the same as a current Brooks B17 saddle.
This doesn't hold true though for most other manufacturers of mass produced plastic saddles. They change them constantly, bringing out new models every year in an effort to sell more.
A lot of todays saddles are nothing more than a plastic base with some padding on it. The shapes change slightly from model to model, the padding increases or diminishes in thickness, but the basic plastic base with some padding on it still remains generally the same....every year.
This type of saddle can NEVER conform to the riders physical body dimensions and RETAIN that shape.
Every time you get on the bike and sit on a plastic based saddle, you have to start all over again, moulding the padding to the shape of your body. If the basic shape and fit is good, then fine, you may find happiness with this type of saddle, but unfortunately, most riders do not.
However, riders continue to put up with the discomfort because they don't know any better, or they are simply too lazy to do some research and find out what is good and what is not where saddles are concerned.
A lot of riders, especially female ones, think that extra padding will make the saddle more comfortable for them.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
That nice "comfy" soft deep padding will soon become hellishly uncomfortable after a few miles as their sit bones sink into it and they are then getting pressure all over the soft tissues of the genital area.
Nothing will make an enthusiastic beginner, male or female, give away riding a bike faster than a bad saddle !!!
That's why I say that we all need to go to any length to get the saddle that fits us perfectly, one that is comfortable to sit on for hours or days if need be, a saddle that makes riding our bike a wonderful experience instead of a torturous nightmare.
Saddles, like bottoms, come in all shapes and sizes. Our skeletal structure does too, but the most important part of our skeleton structure in biking is the so-called "sit bones", those two lumps of bone that protrude from our skeletal framework when we sit down.
Males usually have narrower sit bone measurements than females, so we can find comfort on relatively narrower saddles than the fairer sex, but we men still need to get a saddle that fits our particular sit bone width for the best comfort.
All good well-fitting saddles will take pressure off your genital area and you will be sitting mainly on the sit bones, NOT on your soft genital tissues.
This is especially important with female riders. That is why deep soft padding on a saddle wont work for them, it simply squashes down quickly and then places pressure on the whole soft genital tissue area causing extreme discomfort over longer distances.
Cut Away saddles are generally the best type of saddle to ride any distance on, especially if they have good support under the riders sit bones. The centre of the saddle is removed completely or depressed well below the rest of the saddle so that it places no pressure on the soft tissues. A good example of this is the Selle AnAtomica.
In the final analysis, it is up to each individual to make it their goal to go out and find the ideal perfect saddle for him or herself.
I just can't stress enough how important this quest is. A good comfortable saddle can make you want to ride more, simply because it just doesn't hurt to sit on it for hours, so you can then enjoy the ride.
Here are some examples of some extremely comfortable saddles for this rider... they are a Selle-modified Brooks B17 and there is also a Selle "Titanico" and a couple of brooks modified leather saddles.
[The best mass-produced plastic seat I have ever ridden on is without a doubt, the old WTB Rocket V. It's a very narrow saddle with a small "whale-tail" at the back. If I had to use a mass-produced plastic seat .... that would be the one.]
Good luck with finding your personal best saddle. It's well worth the effort to find .... "The One"
