    Urgent. Need touring advice ASAP

HI all. I'm about to meet someone who wants to sell me a 2007 Bianchi Roger, a single speed cyclocross bike which I would possibly also use for touring. I already have a specialized Epic (2010). Do you think its possible to go touring (road) on the epic, or should I buy this bike? Or neither?

I wouldn't want to pedal a full-suspension bike like the S Epic on the road. A lot of extra weight, not to mention the inefficiency of a soft platform. Then there's the extra unnecessary suspension maintenance. Naw, road touring and shocks of any sort aren't a great combination.

The Bianchi has disc brakes, which would be nice for descending long hills. Cyclocross bikes are generally pretty durable, which is good for a touring bike. But you'd better really love riding a single-speed to tour with one. Personally, I think that gears are good for road touring. Climbing hills with touring gear is hard work, even with gears!

If you're really going to tour a bunch, look for a dedicated touring bike!

Any suggestions for a cost-effective (cheapish) touring bike?

Been a LONG time since I did much road touring. But here are a couple of ideas/examples:

There`s a lot more info out there on the internet of course, but this article is a pretty good summary IMO. One page is dedicated to bikes, the rest to other stuff that will likely interest you also.
