    Tour De Lakes Apalachicola Nat'l Forest 9/22 & 9/23/12

Did a short trip with a few buddies who've never bikepacked before in the Apalachicola National Forest, sticking to west side of tallahassee and hitting up bodies of water from a start at a friends house, to my place. Left out on a Saturday afternoon(4pm) and made a little mileage, camped, and finished up the trip by lunch hte next day.

    Route

    Kinda went like this.

Cascade Lakes, we actually travelled on dry lake bottom. The levels are rising again, so this particular section may not be doable again for some time.

    Silver Lake

Most of the wildlife we encountered were birds, gators, and snakes. Although at night we heard boar, coyotes, and maybe bear as well.

    Moore Pond

Setup camp at Dog Lake just before night

It was a beautiful morning, fog over the lake and the sun breaking through the treeline.

Lost Lake after alot of walking through loose sand on ATV trails

    Lofton Ponds

Some apparently unnamed sinkhole in the woods?

Saved a baby gopher tortoise from the pavement

Eventually hit the singletrack of Munson and road it back to the trailhead at St Marks and took the paved bike trail back to my place. Everyone had a great time

Florida has the coolest areas. I was only there once for a short time but, got lots of hiking in. Spent a few days in the woods on/around Eglin AFB and had a lot of fun. There are tons of roads and trails there if you don't mind all the orb spiders crossing every open spot.

    Nice ride post!

What a great trip report thanks so much for sharing it.
After seeing that cottonmouth I think the hammock was the best sleeping system of the bunch.

We're blessed by cottonmouths, copperheads, several flavors of rattlesnakes, and coral snakes. Floridas got it all Now with pythons and huge invasive lizards too!
