Shelters options in SW desert in October

I will be bikepacking in the Moab area in early October and wondering about a bivy vs a silnylon tarp for overnighting. I have both to choose from -- an Oware tarp and a BD Tripod bivy.

The bivy weighs more but would keep any unwanted creepy-crawlies out. The tarp is more spacious and cool.

I am a Pacific NW boy, so I am clueless as to the nuances. Thanks for any help/advice!

I'd watch the weather. If the coast looks clear I'd skip shelter entirely.

If rain is possible, I'd go tarp. October is Moab's rainiest month. Early fall storms can hammer, making the daytime shelter that a tarp can provide very welcome.

Sounds good. I will take the tarp and experiment more with ways to suspend it from my upside-down bike, with a single short fiberglass pole, etc.
