Amtrack, east coast USA
Thinking of taking Amtrack to get away and riding back to Pa. Prefer a mix of dirt road, singletrack and rail trail if that's possible. Some pave is acceptable, but don't want to be a road tour.
One thought is top of the state of New York to home.

Anyone know how Amtrack is with bicycles. Do I need a hard case bicycle box?
Anyone do this or something similar on the east coast USA?
Amtrak Train Routes across the USA and to Canada
Some Amtrak routes allow bicycles, some do not. Basically some trains don't have dedicated baggage cars and thus can't find the giant Amtrak bike boxes.
If you take a train with a bike in a box, it's pretty simple. Roll into the station, remove your pedals (yourself), turn your handlebars sideways, roll it into the box, and you're good to go. The box is $15 or something.
One really great trip is to/from Pittsburgh and Washington DC on the GAP and C&O. The train is easily accessible from each end and you get 330-ish miles of car-free riding in between.
Thanks for that great info!
