26/39/50 too much range on FD-3503?

After much shopping and deliberation, my girlfriend decided to go with the new Windsor Tourist bike. The main things that we decided it would need was a lower granny gear and cassette for climbing under load. So, we were looking to change the chainring stock config of 30/39/50 to 26/39/50, as I had found several threads online about the great range of the Tiagra front mech that was advertised as included with the Tourist. Many people were running even more extreme chainring capacities of 26t and 28t.

Well, BD shipped it with a different front mech (Sora FD-3503) instead of the one advertised (Tiagra), and I can't find any testimonials of running this FD-3503 at greater than the listed 20t capacity.

Anyone have experience running an FD-3503 at 24t or greater chainring capacity?

I apologize if this is away from your original intent, but I don't know the answer to the question. What I do know, however, is that I would contact the seller regarding their discrepancy. Maybe they'll send you the correct fd?

I have run a 26t on a crankset that was originally a 30/39/52 using a 9 speed Tiagra FD. Not sure of the model number. It worked, but was a little finicky because the crankset used an inner chainring that had a slight offset. I finally figured out that it was offset because the chain would rub the middle chainring when I was using the smaller cogs when using the 26t with no offset, so be mindful that this could be an issue.

I think you'd be better off thinking about trying a mountain rear derailleur with a mountain cassette and getting the lower gearing that way. Just a thought.
