    Your first bike.

So I am a college freshman trying to find a geared mtn bike to replace my redline monocog 29er and I have realized that everything is super expensive. The question is what was your first bike and how did you make the money to buy it? BTW any suggestions on race quality bijes on the cheap would be greatly appreciated.

The best bet would be to line up around $550 or so and set up an Ebay account if you are looking to find a race grade hardtail. I say that because I think it is going to be very tough to find a bike in your area that will meet all your criteria of race grade, size, and price. Not much information on this one but its in your area and its about the only bike that is race grade.

Heres an example of what you could get by looking closely at Ebay for less than $500 a bike with a Sid Fork and almost all XT/XTR including an XTR crank.

To answer your question, my first bike was a Raleigh 600. It was gold and super ugly. Like REALLY gold. And I got the money by dropping out of college and getting a job (I don't recommend doing that, stay in school and in 3 years you can have the tricked out bike of your dreams).
I've been looking around E-Bay a lot lately too for a new ride, and thats a good recommendation, it seems used bikes have a really crappy resale value.
