Cool-blue Rhythm XC race steel hardtail 26er frame?

I broke my old XC race steel HT frame while ascending a gentle hill with my dog running by. C'est la vie.

I like to "race" XC events on a steel 26er hardtail. I'm a wee bit curious about a 26er carbon hardtail, but seems like that's paying a lot of money to finish mid-pack. Maybe the carbon ride is that much enjoyable over a crmo frame?

please recommend a "light" XC race steel HT frame for under $1500?
Not all-mountain. Not FR. Racing for the intrinsic joy of it: Could careless about trophies, but will accept cash prizes or useful swag...if)

Just for XC race, for example:
    Downieville XC
    Leadville 100 miles
    Nappa Valley Dirt Classic
    Annadale 31 miles

    There's probably more.
