    Surley troll or Soma analog???

    Hello!
My friend is looking for a steel mtb frame for trips and outback ridings. No more asphalt, but back roads. He rides marathons 70-100 km and bikepacking rides for about 5-9 days.
Which frame will be better for him?

Troll made 18" and 19". Нe is 180cm. Which size will suit him?

Have you asked him what he wants? Have your friend join the conversation. While all of us will undoubtedly tell you what is best for ourselves, the answer you are looking for is what is best for him. Further, top tube length or effective top tube length rather than stand over height may be a better measure of fit. 180cm is roughly 5'10" for us English unit diehards, but this doesn't say anything about inseam or arm length.

I would also say to check the bike packing threads for people's opinions on these frames as tourers since your question is also about intended use and not specifically frame materials, rear dropout style, or geometry.

Having stated the above I am 5'10+, my 2 main rides are an 18.5 RMB Blizzard and a converted to 650b 17.5 Bianchi MUSS, so maybe more like a 18.25".

Finally, has there been any consideration for something like the Salsa Fargo?

Then make a comparison list between the 2, decide beforehand how to weigh each attribute of the frames, add it up and get the frame with the most points. Again, I think you might find some good reads using the search function and asking some specific questions. Good luck and happy rollin'!
