    Steel race bike options

Looking for a bike to replace the Jamis dragon That i foolishly sold a few years back. It seems the options for 26" quality steel frame are significantly more limited than they were just a few years back and in place are 29" wheel options. Trying to build the bike on a budget so the nice handmade stuff is out for now. Looking for 853 or ox platinum with race oriented geometry.
Been searching the classified for a dragon or salsa ala carte. As far a new options right now

    I have on my list:

Soma analog- price is right but not a fan of the tange tubing and those funky sliding dropouts.
Pipedream scion- Reynolds 853 and decent price- only hesitation is geo and there is limited info/ reviews that I could find.

Any other options that I may be over looking?

Have you considered a hardtail with this new "British design' / "modern geometry" but built up like XC or what I call 'aggressive XC'. Something like a Cotic Soul or the Soma Analog built around a 100mm fork and then light components? Long top tube, short stem, bigger front tire.

It's difficult to find one that isn't overbuilt and heavy. It's a niche that hasn't been made popular yet.

    Analog
    Soul Cotic
    Orang P7

Stout bicycles makes some great value custom frames and he's making a frame along theses lines with light OX Plat tubes and butted/tapered stays.

some others to consider if you can find them
    Voodoo
    Nashbar 853 orange frame

What size are you looking for. I've got a custom BREW that is really light. It's geometry is on the quick side for me.
    New Frame
    16.5 C-T
    16.5 chain stay length
    71.5 Head angle
    73 seat
    Head Tube 3 9/16
    22.3" effective top tube
    1 1/8 headset
    B height -1 from axle
Seat tube: externally butted Reynolds 531
    Chainstay 531
    Seat stay 531
    Top tube 631/753
    Down tube 853

At 900 or so the Gunnar is a bit more than what I want to spend but it's on my list for eBay and classified searches along with IF and vicious cycles among others. Would love to find a nice frame hand built in the US for sure and am holding out hope I find a used one in the right size.

Ashwinearl- I have come across many on your list that fall into the 'aggressive xc' category but a bit too beefy for my needs, plus don't think geo is what I am looking for. Good list though, a few I will look into further. Also pm'd you on that brew.

I"m currently riding an Analog 17" with recons lowered to 100mm with a reba dual air cart. Its a great riding little bike, I probably should have gone for a 19 inch to get a bit more stretch going on. Had some Van 125's on it before but it didn't feel right, it may have been the noodly forks or maybe the slacker h/a from taller forks. It's reasonably stiff and handles being SS'd with a fatty on it (260lbs) and the dropouts have been set once for the right length on my SS chain and have not made a noise or slipped or anything. They're also a cool feature for playing with Geo... can lengthen your chainstay buy an inch The factory fork is a thing of beauty too, nice and supple yet very predictable.
