    Standard headtube with tapered steerer?

I have a 2011 trek ex5 with a standard headtube that takes a 1 1/8 steerer and standard external cups headset. I think the guy at the LBS misunderstood me when we were talking about fork upgrades. He told me that I can get a headset that will allow me to run a 1.5 tapered steerer. I can not seem to find this type of headset. Can y'all help me?

Let me make sure I am clear. I do not have a tapered head tube, I have a standard headtube with, I believe, a lower diameter of 39 mm. The cups and bearings on both ends are the same size. Is there a headset that actuall allows me to run a 1.4 tapered steerer?

As far as I know you can't run a tapered fork in your head tube. There are adapters to run a straight steerer in a tapered head tube though.

It can't be done. You can put a straight fork in a tapered headtube but not the other way around

I'm not familiar with Trek but this *should/could* work if your headtube is 44mm.

I've seen it done- but it required heavy fabrication - Today's DIY project...
