    Sette Ace or Motobecane Fantom

I'm about to put 800 to 1000 into a bike and it comes down to these 2. Funds are limited and I'm wondering which frame is better. If I get the Fantom I'll be upgrading because all I can swing price wise this summer is the Fantom Trail.

Wouldn't the Flite be a closer match to compare?

I'm assuming you meant the Fantom DS Comp @ $1095 right? Kind of a hard call and depends on the terrain. The Ace looks like a great 4" travel bike, and just a killer deal for $1k. However, I wouldn't pick it for super rough terrain. The Fantom on the other hand has a Tora 302 U-Turn up front with 85-135mm of travel and 3/4/5" travel in the back by changing the pivot bolt. For smoother trails or longer XC rides, the Ace would be my choice.

I like the looks of the Sette Ace though, and the component spec is better throughout. I prefer SRAM X7 to SLX shifters, and the XT Hubs nice on a bike at that price point. I like the Monarch 2.1 better on the Ace than the Ario as well, but they are really very close. Once thing to consider is that they may not continue the Sette Ace line, so replacement parts might be hard to come by. Looks like the new Sette Dero is going to take the place of the 4" travel full suspension.

If you're comparing the Fantom Trail to the Flite - there's no comparison (Sure I may be biased) but objectively - build-wise - the Flite is a better bike and more $$ too...
PLUS, it's moot...as jhud51 (memorable s/n BTW ), pointed out, all that's left of the Flites are too small.

I think in your price you are better to stick to a HT the sette is ok but not so plush and the parts are so so. You could get a bling bling HT for that price

Well, if you want to open this up to other FS bikes around the $1k price point...

    Jamis Dakar XCT 1.0 - $1049
    - 130mm Tora 302 Solo Air
    - RockShox Bar 2.1
    - SLX/Derore
    - WTB/Ritchey Cockpit
    - Avid Juicy 3 hydro discs

Same system as the GT...not a URT as there is a pivot between the bottom bracket and the rear triangle. It actually works similar to a true 4 bar link with drivetrain and braking forces remaining active. The downside is that it is heavier.

Yeah, I had to go look at pics from the NDS to get a feel for it - I still knew that URT was somehow wrong tho

Gotta say two heads, that DOES look good. Thanks, I'm gonna give them a call. I don't think you can call Pricepoint or Bikesdirect.

BTW I already have been the hardtail route: I have a Fisher Tassajara. I just want to try the FS thing. Hate to say it but I'm not getting any younger at this point and the hardtail is getting pretty rough on the bod.

I feel you on the not getting any younger part. If I were you I would go with jamis bike in the pic above. if not spend some more like 1500 and get a BMC speedfox

Actually JP I think I'm gonna sell a couple of extra pints of blood and try for the Jamis XCT 2.0. I can get that for 1200.00.
