    rear derailleur suggestions, please

I have 1 x 8 with a 38 front ring and I put on a new cassette with a 34 low gear. I have a Avilio derailleur and shifter. I can find all the gears, it's just not very consistent, smooth, etc. Any suggestions on an up grade?

You can't go wrong with Shimano XT or Sram X.9 but you'll have to go 9 or even 10spd if you want new stuff.

Gonna be hard but not impossible to find and 8spd XT shifter. Check used on fleabay.

Before making any changes, you may want to make sure the cable isn't sticking and the hanger is straight. Either can affect shifting more than the difference between component levels.

I'm always amazed at the difference a $5 cable can make when I change it every year.

You can use any 9 speed derailleur on an 8 speed system. A Shimano SLX or XT would both be significant improvements over your Alivio.
