I'm looking to buy my boy a new bike for his 6th birthday. I'm torn between a BMX bike or something like the Specialized Hotrock with 7 speeds and a little RST front fork. Does anyone know of any cool bikes for little guys? What would be awesome is something along the lines of the Kona Stuff J.R., but my little guy isn't quite big enough for that yet. I'm thinking a BMX will tolerate more punishment as he grows and possibly takes after Daddy and hits some big jumps, but the Hotrock with gears will help him clear the hills in our neighborhood.
Thanks for any thoughts or insights to some cool kids bikes. What would rock would be a kids BMX bike with gears, kinda like a little Johnny Tomac BMXer for kids.

My daughter just turned 8. She has an older Jamis Fester: http://www.jamisbikes.com/bikes/05_fester20.html. It's a nice bike but it weighs a ton. The poor kid needs gears just to get the thing up to speed.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to setup lighter weight bikes for them as they grow. I'm thinking about buying or building up used, XS adult MTB frames.

My son who just turned 5 has been on a 16" wheeled BMX for a year. I got one w/o coaster brakes to teach him how to use hand brakes and backpedal to position the cranks for power. When he is big enough for a 20" bike then we'll look at MTBs. He has a Haro Mirra 360.

My 2 oldest girls ride Haros 20inch version. This is a great bike. The components are very, very good for a kids bike. It is great because it has already taught them both about handbrakes and gears (it is a 6 speed cassette). I have been very impressed. Also, it has a threadless headset and what is also very nice, is that it has a quick release on the front wheel which I did not see any other 20" bikes have. It is not cheap though....about $225 i think but worth it to me.
My girls with this bike are now 7 and 9, but hey have had it for almost 2 years. The guy at the bike shop thought it might be too big for my then 6 year old daughter but it was not at all and I am especially glad I did it since I would have already had to buy her a new bike by now anyway.
