    K2 Zed 4.0 or Attack 1.0

Which of these two bikes should I get? I am just begging to start mountain bikeing and I want to get a bike that will last me a while. Is it possible to add a rear shock to the zed later?

No, you cannot add a shock to the Zed later. I started with an Attack 2.0. If you're serious about riding, I would not recommend it beyond a casual recreation trail bike. The suspension is downright lousy and it's VERY heavy.

what if it was the zed 4.0 or attack 2.0? which would be the better bike

the reason that i am getting a k2 bike is because i can get a really good discount on them

well i just came back from my bike shop and have a few more options.

    1) Trek 4300 ($ 320)
    2) Specialized Hardrock Sport ($310)
    3) K2 Zed 4.0 (I can get it for ~$300)
    4) K2 Attack 1.0 (~ $300)
    5) K2 Attack 2.0 (~ $400)

so those are my options, right now im leaning towards 2), 3), and 5)

    what do you think?

#3 and #5 are the only real choices there because the others all have RST forks which are crap. I already replied that I regret buying my Attack. I would have been better off spending the same amount on a hardtail.

I've never ridden the K2 Attack, but it looks very similar to the Jamis Dakar frame design, so prehaps it's the rear shock that K2 equips on the bike which makes it less desirable. Strictly speaking from a components standpoint, the K2 Zed 4.0 has much better components than all the rest of the bikes including the Trek and Specialized. On top of that, the Zed being the cheapest, I would say if you want a hardtail, you might as well cross the others off the list.

You know, $300 for a Zed 4.0 is way too cheap - it's an $800 bike. I did a quick look on the web and 2004 models are over $500. What year Zed 4.0 is it you're looking at?

With a price like that, I'd jump on the Zed 4.0.

    what year are the bikes?
I have a attack 2.0 2002 and its been a decent frame. If its an 05 bike then the attacks are fine and spec wise are not that much different with the 05 zed 4. If its an 03 or 04 the frames were too beefy for some reason. I wouldnt recommend those. 05 seems to have gone back to a regular looking frame like the 02's.

I do miss the simplicity of a hardtail though.
