I am looking to get into mountain biking- I want a bike that can take some jumps/falls/damage and am looking into used due to the affordability. I am talking to the owner of this bike and he is willing to give it to me for $430- can I get some professional advice? I guess you could say I want a rock hopper. I am 6'2, 220 pounds (have lost about 100 pounds so far) 17 years old.

Neither of those bikes are considered freeride bikes. It's impossible to put a label on what a "freeride" bike is, but check out some manufacturers' websites and see what their freeride bikes look like. You'll see a pattern in frame designs and components. On a side note, it's also difficult to find a decent freeride bike capable of handling real jumps, drops, and stunts for less than $1500. A decent full-suspension freeride bike will run over $2000. However, bikes like the Giant Brass series are a fairly affordable and should have a burly frame worth replacing parts as needed.

You are 602 and both of those bikes have 16.5 inch framces. You need a frame thats either 20 or 21 inches so dont even look at them. Take a look at these four. A couple of them are all-mountain FS bikes. It can be tough to find the right size and the right price. Try to eliminate all bikes that were made in the 90's or earlier and dont have at least 24 speeds. Also eliminate any bike that doesnt have at least a 20 inch frame.
