Help a newb - how do I replace my forks?

I want to replace my forks on my really old Trek 4500 to do some road riding. Looking for a solid or lockable fork on eBay- how do I figure out what size I need to get?

    Thanks

Try running by a local shop. If they deal with J and B distributors there are lots of decent choices.

Yes thanks- I normally do support my LBS but in this case the bike is like 12 or more years old so not looking to buy new and paying retail....

    Thanks

You need to determine the steerer diameter and head tube length.
