Help me decide?? Specialized vs Trek?

Heya! So I'm just starting out and have no idea how to value mtb's and their components... Ideally, I'd ride a 16", but I haven't had much luck finding a decent used one

I'm checking out 2 bikes tomorrow:

    '01 15" Specialized Hardrock A1 FS - $190
    Specialized Hardrock 15" Mountain Bike
    Attachment 890225

    and

    '04 (I think, but could be anywhere from 02-04 :/) trek 4300 - $225
    Trek 4300 21-speed MTB w/ 17" frame for 5'1" to 5'7" -- tuned up!!!
    Attachment 890226

Any feedback would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

I'd get the trek because I hate my local specialized dealer.

I'm all reality they are probably pretty equal.

I'll put in a plug for the Trek just because I ride a 4300 and it is aaaaawesome.

The frames are very comparable. I am not familiar with the particular years, but my son's first MTB was a 2005 Trek 4300 which is a strong if heavy bike and still in service as a beat-up commuter bike. The Hardrock is a good frame, main knock on it is that it is heavy. Both frames are solid entry level hardtails that will be on the heavy side. I would buy whichever one appears to have the better components; I am guessing this will be the Trek because the Specialized is older and fork technology has come a looong way since 2001. Focus on wheels and fork; they are far more expensive and ultimately more important to the purchase decision than the drivetrains on these bikes, which is inexpensive and easily replaced. For those prices the bikes at this age should be in good condition with everything working smoothly.

Just noticed this is all probably too late. Let us know what you decided. The brand of bike is not that important. The condition and components matter the most.

TREK. I have a 4300 hardtail as well and it rides pretty good.
