    Difference between model years

How big is the difference between say, this year's new model 2014 of a bike company to the 2012 or 2013 version. Would it be worth it to buy an older bike that is a better model then a newer bike that is a worse model?

What im basically asking which bike is better?

    Talon 29er 2 (2012) - Bikes | Giant Bicycles | United States

    Revel 29er (2014) - Bikes | Giant Bicycles | United States

The first one is older, but a better model (apparently), the second is newer and a worse model (apparently)

If your local bike shop has one of each of those bikes in your size in stock, go test ride them and see which one rides/feels better to you. I would doubt they'd have too many bikes that are two model years old, but I don't know that. The one thing you have going for you is they may have the 2012 model on sale or be able to take some money off the price since it's older. If all that works out for you and you like the 2012 model more, you will, essentially, get more bike (msrp-wise) for the money.

As far as the differences between the bikes, there isn't really too much. They are both considered to be recreational mountain bikes. You'll get very similar 24 speed drivetrains on both bikes, the 2014 will have Shimano components and the 2012 will have Sram. You may find yourself having a preference on one over the other after a test ride. The 2012 Talon will have 20mm more suspension travel, but that may or may not mean much to you depending on what types of trails you'll be riding.

What is it that you're looking for in a bike? What types of riding will you be doing?
Mountain bikers who don't road ride have no legs...
Road riders who don't mountain bike have no soul...

I was looking to do some downhill, but just general trail riding. so theres really no general rule of thumb, except just ride it and see what you like?
