1 1/8 threaded fork with modern Stem, possible?

Project Bike= 95' Trek 950. First Mistake... I wanted to use some handlebars and a stem I had so I bought a 1" to 1 1/8 Inch Quill Stem Adaptor, come to find out Trek switched from a 1" to a 1 1/8 threaded in 91'... I have a 95'. I want to use the fork on the bike but want the flexibility of using a modern Stem. How can I do this? I can't find a 1 1/8 inch Quill Stem adaptor/extension. Can a shim be used?

Yes, they make adapters. The ID of the steerer tube isn't 1 1/8, it's roughly an inch. So you need a 25.4 to 28.6 adapter. Here's a link from EBAY.

If you had an inch threaded steerer tube you'd need one with a 22.5 mm diameter.
