I would not really consider myself new to mountain biking, been doing it for years, but I am currently expanding it a bit. In the past I have always hardtailed, mostly freeriding and some downhill. But I recently bought a "kit" bike that I plan to fix/upgrade to my wants. It is a 2000 K2 EVO 4.0, seemed a good bike [based on the reviews I read] for the money I spent. It was evidently a bit more of a "kit" bike than the previous owner led me to believe, and will probably take a good amount of work.
Here is my list of to-do for sure on the bike:
And my list of possibilities:
Aside from that, the tires look fine, treads are deep enough for what I need. Frame will be repainted, and the ICP stickers removed [silly skaters ]. I am just looking to get a decent bike that can handle most anything I can throw at it.
My main questions are simple in the beginning, they may become more complicated as time passes, and this forum looked like it had no shortage of members to tell me exactly what I am doing wrong.
And last but not least, I am on a relatively tight budget, so I'd say I have about $100 or so to get all the mentioned stuff done. Just something to keep in mind before I suddenly have $1500 in parts on a $120 bike.
Thanks for your help.
Here is my list of to-do for sure on the bike:
- Handlebars, as they have been re-bent to previous owner's specs, metal showing wear I don't like.
- Front shifter at least, as it's gone.
- Seat, something that isn't all foamy.
- Pedals, not a fan of the Huffy style, thanks.
- Rear axle with non-quick-release [I have a tendency to break these, it seems]
And my list of possibilities:
- Disc brakes, front and rear if possible and not too expensive
- Upgraded rear shock [this was the primary negative attribute I read on reviews]
- Some sort of front gear guard, as I tend to move most of the grease to my leg when I ride.
Aside from that, the tires look fine, treads are deep enough for what I need. Frame will be repainted, and the ICP stickers removed [silly skaters ]. I am just looking to get a decent bike that can handle most anything I can throw at it.

- Does anybody own this same bike, so I can get an idea of what the rear derailer actually even attaches? I looked at it, but didn't see anything obvious, and as this is my first rear-suspension bike, I am a bit lost.
- Would it adversely affect the frame tensile strength to run the derailer and rear brake lines inside the frame ? Aesthetics only, no functional purpose.
- Any particular kinds of paint to get a good finish, and one that will stay?
- Any good places to look for the parts that I mentioned earlier ? I haven't often shopped for parts outside of my local shops, and they aren't much help for this stuff.
