What are the most important features?

When purchasing a bike, what are the most important features a newb like myself should look out for? Last year I purchased a hybrid based on the advice of the LBS. Now that I've been riding my current bike for a year now I'm ready for some more action. My question is, when purchasing a hardtail bike what features should I focus on (Frame, component, drivetrains, wheels) ? I see a ton of bikes in my price range $500-700 and I've narrowed it down to 4 but when I read the details of each bike I get lost as to what features are most important .

These are the bikes I'm looking at and referred by my LBS:

    Jamis Durango 1
    Raleigh Talus 5.0
    Jamis Exile 1
    Giant Revel 0

Any of those bikes are fine. The most important aspect of choosing a bike is fit. Ride them all and determine which one feels best to you. That's matters most.

Exactly what Ken in KC said, FIT IS MOST IMPORTANT! Ride them all and then decide, you may even narrow the list down some more too, or quite possibly expand it. You will know if it is the bike for you.

With that being said, if I was to ride all of these bikes and like every single one of them fit wise (very slim chance of that happening). I would go with the Revel 0. SRAM x.5 (shifters and R. derail, comparable to Deore I believe) over Alivio (below Deore), Dart 2 over Suntour hands down, AVID BB5's (BB7's are the brakes that everyone loves, these are just a step below them) over Tektro IO.

Just my opinion, but MAKE SURE YOU RIDE THEM ALL FIRST!

If you don't come back banged up and bruised, you didn't go hard enough!
