Listen! What are the different types of riding?

I'm new to mountain biking so I've been reading as much as I can to become more informed. While reading posts I keep seeing references to different riding styles, such as all mountain, XC, downhill, single track, etc.

What are the differences in these styles of riding and what do they mean?

    Thanks!

In that thread, Snaky69 has the most accurate description, IMO.
    Mountain Bike Riding Styles Explained

Singletrack is just a trail that is not wide enough for more than one at a time. Many feel that singletrack is the ideal environment for a mountain bike.

There's the good, the bad, and the ugly.
