1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Trek 6700 or Gravity from BikesDirect?

Hey everyone, I'm looking for advice between buying a used (like new) 2006 Trek 6700 and a new Gravity or Motobecane from BikesDirect. All are about the same price ($600-700), but I guess what I'm really curious about is the quality of bikes on BikesDirect and if the components on those bikes are better than the ones on the Trek 6700 (I'm not very familiar with mtb components yet). Lastly, is a 29er a good idea for a beginner? Any advice is appreciated!!

In this case, the new bikes direct is a clear winner. That used trek is worth about 300 less than asking

I was almost in the same boat as you several month ago and I chose Gravity .1 also my budget was smaller. So far no regrets, really happy with the bike.
