1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Trek 4500 vs 2006 Gary Fisher Wahoo vs Raleigh M80 with extras

Just started riding. Found these on craigslist needed some advice since I don't know much about this stuff yet.

First bike is a Trek 4500. Guy said he bought it new a couple of years ago so it's probably a 2010 or so. At $145 it's the most affordable.

Second is a Trek 2006 Gary Fisher Wahoo. According to the craigslist ad, the guy took good care of it. Asking $250.

Also this Raleigh M80 comes with a rack, a helmet, a pump, lots of stuff. This one has disc brakes. Asking $350 for everything.

I know you probably get a ton of these threads but every search I did on bikes had this forum at the top. And you have a beer forum so I signed up, hopefully I can learn something. Thanks

Those bikes have different frame sizes.
Different frame sizes suit different size riders.

    Trek looks to be small
    Raleigh looks to be medium
Gary Fisher looks to be large

Get a bike that has the right frame size for you.

I'm just under 5'8". Not sure what size frame I should be looking for.

Test ride the Raleigh it's probably about the right frame size for you, the Gary Fisher looks like it'd be too big for you and the Trek is probably too small for you.
