1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Shimano SLX Crankset - is 9 and 10 compatible

    Currently I own a 9 gear (Megadrive) crankset FC M660 SLX 44-32-22.
I am wondering can I install it in a bike with a 10 gear (Dynasys) system? Is it compatible? Or do you I have to change the cogs?

I remember when I was buying the 9 gear crankset the sales guy said it doesnt really matter if I buy the Dynasys / Megadrive but I didn't really believe him...

006_007 is right. I ran a FC-665 SLX double with SLX 10 spd dynasys working as the rear half of my drivetrain. It worked well, but I am running 1x10 now.

I just measured a SLX 9 speed triple and last years and this years(13) SLX triples with a caliper and they are the same.
And of course the chain ring gear tooth width is the same because the chain roller width is the same only the side plates are thinner for 10 speed chains.

So the 3x9 and 3x10 crankset is compatible? good news! I wonder why 3x9 has 44/32/22 and 3x10 has 42/34/24?

I think the reason given was because of the cassette going to not only ten speeds but also to a 36 tooth big cog. I guess it gives a more workable range without a lot of overlap.

Had everything to do with the 9sp used a 11-34 cassette, and the 10sp stuff is typically a 11-36. I actually prefer the 22T on 650b bikes (I find bigger wheels slightly harder to spin up and appreciate the slightly easier gearing).

I have used mega-drive (9 speed) chainrings on an SLX crankset with a 10 speed drivetrain. Worked perfectly.
