    Racing Progress! Finally!

I had 2 goals I wanted to reach before the end of my 1st year of xc racing:

1 - Finish in the top 20 of a race (most my races have 35 - 45 in my cat).
2 - Beat 60 minutes (most of my races are 10-12 miles).

    Sunday I did both!

First race where I ran almost flawlessly, attacked the course, and used my energy wisely. I did not hesitate to pass, and I found myself aggressively seeking out those in front of me to move up positions.

I finished 15 out of 44 in my age group, 46 of 116 in the cat, and in 59:43minutes. I was in the top 1/3 of all racers in the cat and I beat many of the racers in the 2 younger age groups in front of me despite them starting ahead of my age group.

This was my 5th race of the year.

I cant wait till next year after a whole off season of conditioning (I bought the Mountain Bikers Workout Bible), and a full 12 race schedule! Im looking forward to posting my first Podium shot next year!

    Heres my results:

    Thank You!

I have to give a big shout out to my NRS3.

I bought it used for $400 and stuck about $600 into it and it held up through 75+ rides and 5 races with very little adjusting. Add to that the fact I weigh 195# and it makes for a pretty impressive review for Giant and the bikes they build. Not bad for a bike that was $1200 in 2005!

Great Job Patton!!! I knew that would be a course that you would love. Glad I was able to give you a little course preview before the race. Now that the season's over I'm already planning for next year. Hopefully we can both make it to the podium at least once

3fast I really appreciate the help this year! Lets get a few rides in before the snow falls! Maybe next year I can beat the "Equalizer" like you

carspidey I would google Cross Country Mountain Bike Racing xxxxxxxxx with your state being the x's.

Good luck, its a ton of fun!

Patton, I'm always up for a few more rides. I'm thinking nordic mountain or 9 mile forest. I have to figure out if either one is being maintained yet. But I will keep you in the loop Otherwise there is always Ray's MTB this winter. I got a VIP pass from the race, so I will be using that soon

If you finished top 20, what are you doing in the beginners section?

    Fair question.

A couple of responses to that:

1 - This was still only my 5th race, EVER. I just started riding a mountain bike in March of this year.

2 - Up until this race my progress has been marginal. My progress has only been markable by using measuring sticks of how well did I handle the course? Or did I control my breathing? Did I pass when I should? My actual results (placement) showed little to no improvement until my last race.

3 - Up until the last 2 races I did not feel I was in good enough physical condition to finish 3 laps (Cat2) in a race. I was barely finishing the 2 that Cat3 requires.

4 - I want to 'compete' not just finish. I dont see competing in Cat2 when I cant even crack the top 10 yet of Cat3.

All that being said, as soon as I break the top 10 in Cat3 a couple of times I will be moving up to Cat2. Im not the type to sandbag and im always looking to push myself harder.
