1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Another noob here! Wanted to say hi and get some opinions on a 2011 Motobecane Fantom 29Pro. Found it on craigslist for $500 in great shape. Thoughts? It would be my first MTB

Welcome and sounds like a nice ride! Look forward to seeing it soon.

I'm also a noob here, been mountain biking for a few years and have definitely read my fair share of threads but never registered/posted. I've owned a few different bikes, Diamondback X-2, Trek Fuel EX-7, Specialized Hardrock SE, and now my latest - a 2009 Santa Cruz Superlight. Just bought it and haven't had a chance to bring it out to the trails yet as the weather is poor, but can't wait to ride later this week! Will post pics etc. later on. Cheers

I've just signed up, there's only so much you can read before you need to ask questions
No bike as of yet, still in the research and decision process. But it'll be a DH rig when I do.
