1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    New Giant Talon

Here is my new Giant Talon.

I took it on a steep downhill trail this morning and I'm not too happy with the front fork. Is there a way to adjust it so it's more stiff? Or, any suggestions on a decent upgrade without breaking the bank?

They scam you with that bike path fork. No adjustment basically. It is a spring with grease. No rebound control adjustment= pogo.
What size wheel bike is that.

Thanks!! Very reasonably priced! This might be a dumb thought... but this fork would through off my black/green color scheme. I'm assuming most MTB forks don't match the bike anyway?

When you get to the bottom on the first big run, see if you care.

Forks are engineered with specific parts to work as a unit.

So, I'm thinking of buying this fork: 2014 SR Suntour Epicon XC 27 5 650B Remote Manual Lockout MTB Suspension Fork | eBay

What's the difference between remote lockout vs. manual lockout?

Remote lock out is a lever on your handlebars, the manual lockout has the lever on the fork.

I see. .. but don't you have to be off the bike to lock out the fork? If that's true, I'm not sure if it makes sense to have the lockout of the handlebars....

The epicon is a great fork though I love mine. I can't speak for longevity, but I've put hundreds of miles on mine this season and its as fluid as new.

Since forks generally come in one, maybe 2 colors per model... Most bikes I see don't match their forks unless they're lower end forks that the manufacturer had suntour custom spray.
