Hello all.... Have been riding a 2000 Gary Fisher Tassajara since I bought it new. I am looking into a FS bike. LBS has a new '11 Trek Fuel at a reduced price $1300 and my buddy has a 09 Gary Fisher Procaliber $1500 that is in excellent condition. He wanted to go back to a HT. I think I know the answer as to which to go with but I figured I would ask for some opinions.
Where are you located? The Trek Superstore has the 2012 Trek EX6 for $1399 right now I believe. Comes with slightly better components. As for the older Gary Fisher, that is exactly what it is. Something to consider.
If I was looking to get into some intense xc and possibly racing, I would go with the Fisher (I am not a fisher fan).
Much better components. Just know that it is a dedicated xc bike.
Not knowing the condition of the bike but I will assume your buddy likes to ride. If he does what has been replaced? If the answer is nothing then you are going to be looking at a lot more money to replace worn parts.
So if the bike is in excellent shape then I might go with the fisher. Otherwise I would go with a new bike that has a warranty and doesn't ned work out the gate.
I have the 7 from about five years ago and my wife has the 8 (an act of extreme diplomacy on my part). These are great bikes. The new 5 lists for about $1.9K so $1300 is a good deal. I bought a Gary Fischer something or other last year and it was a mistake.
