1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    My first mountainbike

    Hello guys

I'd like to purchase my first mountain bike and I'm kind of undecided between two models, which both fits my budget (they are approximately the same price) and riding plans. Here are the links:

    scott contessa 610

SCOTT Contessa 610 Bike - SCOTT Sports

    trek 4 series 4700

    4700 Disc - Trek Bicycle

The Scott contessa is specifically designed for ladies while the trek is unisex. Does any of you girls have experience with unisex mtb? I there really a difference between unisex bikes and specifically designed for ladies? Any suggestions on the two bikes?

    Thank you

    paolina

The main difference between a WSD (womens specific design) and unisex is that the wsd usually has a shorter top tube for shorter torsos, the top tube usually drops or slopes for a lower stand over height, and sometimes there are other little things(fork setup for less weight, special grips, special saddle)

Ride them both, see which one you like better.

Instead of the 4700 look at and ride the Cali S. Good RockShox XC32 fork for trails. The Suntour fork on the listed bikes is for bike paths.
