just go out and ride with riders better then yourself an have a good time... i'm in the bay area too if you're interested in some AM or DH riding. I'm not really that good of a rider but i do ride with good riders who are willing to help out...
While riding with a group is a great way to go, classes and instructions from pros can be good too. Check out bikeskills.com, they conduct camps in the bay area.
i second the "get out and ride" advice as well. youll learn many many things just getting out there and riding. as your confidence level goes up, your riding level will too. get comfortable on your steed and get to know your limits.
Its just like when i was learning to play the banjo, i would try and try and not be able to get something, i would walk away for a day or two, come back and often get it the first time..
