1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

    mix of brands

    Have anyone had any problem mixing shimano with sram? Like have a shimano rear derailer and a sram front derailer with shimano crankset, etc,etc?

    The only thing you need to worry about is using a SRAM 1:1 rear shifter with a shimano rear dérailleur, or vise-versa. The reason is that the SRAM shifter/der system uses a different cable pull ratio (1:1) than shimano (2:1). SRAM does make a few 2:1 shifters that will work with just shimano rear dérailleurs. This page shows which shifters are shimano compatible (2:1)

    I have Sram twist shifters and a Shimano front derailler, and they work great together. In fact, I prefer the twist shifters because I can more easily get rid of the occasional chain rub on the FD by clicking one spot up or down on the shifter. The FD will move just enough to not hit the chain, but not enough that it allows the chain to shift to a new gear.

    For the rear, keep the 2:1 and 1:1 ratios of each brand in mind when making purchases.

    Thanks for the info! I have a rear Sram x-9 and a front Lx, and I can't find the right fine tuning with the limit crews on the derailers and the cable tension (using the barrels of the shifters) to have a smooth shifting like on my low end hybrid bike. I guess I'll have to go at my LBS and pay the price to have that adjusted.

    There isn't much tolerance in the adjustment factors with drivetrains to achieve quiet no-rub shifts. I've tuned and installed multiple drive trains on my bikes and still break out the instruction manuals from SRAM or Shimano to get the procedure right.
