1. The most important thing about buying a new bike is to make sure it fits. The only way you'll know if the bike is right for you is to size up the bike and make sure that the bike's geometry matches your body's geometry. Ask questions and do some research.

2. If possible, try to find a shop that will let you demo the bike on real dirt. Five minutes in a parking lot won't cut it. You wouldn't buy a car without a real world test drive, and a bike should be no different.
3. Don't belive the hype. Just because your favorite rider or best friend rides a certain bike, that doesn't mean that's the best one for you. Have an open mind and be realistic about your needs and ability.

Looking for a new hardtail bike

well as the title suggests after years of not riding a bike i'm looking to buy a new hardtail bike last bike i owned was a 26inch purple hardtail gt that i loved to death no despite the color. I'm not looking to spend alot of money since I'm pretty much broke as a college student living on my own but i refuse to buy a piece of crap bike thats gonna break down on me over and over. looking to spend around 300. I'm a pretty small guy I'm 5'8 and only 135 lbs so I'm not really that interested in disc breaks, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Go to your local shop and test some out. See what feels right.

Look at your lbs as suggested. Some of the 08 models should be on sale if not now soon. Im your exact same size and i got a 08 spec hardock sport and love it. I personnaly dont think you can beat it as an entry level bike. It should be close to your price range on sale.

I ride a Giant Boulder SE. 295$ tough as hell, takes a beating and so far has done well. Great for the price IMO.
